I believe that the reason IBM wants you to be attached to AC and have
a fully-charged
battery in the Thinkpad when doing the BIOS upgrade is for safety
redundency. If you
lose power during the BIOS upgrade it ruins your EPROM. Therefore,
the battery is a
power back up for the possibility that you lose AC power during the
minute or so that the flash-rom is being upgraded.
