The Thinkpad mouse curser automatically centers itself every 20
seconds or so. Therefore, if you keep steady pressure on it, and
then release it, it will drift until it readjusts for the removal of
the pressure. It is common for people to rest their fingers on the
mouse trackpoint, and then remove their fingers and notice this
drift. The drift should be re-adjusted away after about 20 seconds.

Don't know if this is your problem, but this is the most common
explanation for mouse cursor drift.
