/dev/mouse under Linux on Thinkpad 760CD

Which device file should the link "/dev/mouse" point to on a Thinkpad 760CD?

I had Slackware 3.0 Linux configure my mouse as a PS/2 mouse. This caused
/dev/mouse to become a symbolic link to /dev/psaux. But when I start X it
complains that it can not open the mouse device.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
