I think my ThinkPads have so many frequent flier miles they are eligible
for first class upgrades. . .
(most of the time in or out of Denver international, famous for its
appetite for luggage!)

The best carrier for portable computers that I have seen is the shipping
carton EZ-Serve repair uses. The interior has a plastic/rubber type
hammock in which the ThinkPad is wrapped, and it is suspended inside the
crate. Seems to be very effective. I just shipped a ThinkPad to Paris
and was nervous about it being damaged. I called EZ serve, reported a
problem, they send me a box--which I do intend to use the next time I
need EZ serve--it just went to France first.

Should that not meet your needs, I have shipped ThinkPads in their case
which then gets wrapped in bubble wrap or with some other padding. I
guess if you wanted to be super safe, I would hand carry the hard drive.

Hope this helps.
