Thanks for your helpful comments John, but the system is a 760ED, not 760ELD.
The problem is some sort of Win95 driver issue, because further
experiementation has revealed that the problem does NOT apparently exist
under DOS (warm-swapping CDROM & Floppy works fine). The "hang" in Win95 is
not a full hang apparently, it just takes a couple minutes to respond to the
keyboard. (e.g. I can ctrl-alt-del the system, get the end-task dialog, and
move around in it... provided I wait a minute or so for the system to catch
up with what I do)
