Probably because Kingston has enough name recognition to forego
the large chunk of change IBM demands for "Thinkpad Approved"
advertising privileges.
I've used non-"Thinkpad Approved" memory on both my 750 (Paragon)
and 701 (Kingston) w/o problems. The way I figured it, at the
time, for the price of Thinkpad Approved memory, I could get
almost twice as much Kingston or 3rd party memory.
$269 for 8MB... Those were the days...
