16 bit at two states per bit equals 2^16=65536=64*1024=64k.
windows apparently does a lot of internal processing using 16 bit colors,
and that does not have the memory overhead of 24bit.
the 701-screen (at least the cs-version) does not actually differentiate
to that number of colors, however it is better than 256 colors, simply
because you're avoiding the palette changes.
