While I'm on the subject of Thinkpad problems, the other one I'm having
right now is to do with the display. It flickers a lot. More correctly, it
flickers when the battery level is low. If I use mains and the battery is
100% charged, it's great - no problems. After I've switched to using the
battery, it is liable to start flickering occasionally after a while. The
lower the battery level is, it seems, the greater the degree of flicker.
It's variable, however. Some times I get the odd flicker when I type, other
times the whole thing goes nuts during heavy work (e.g. moving the
trackpoint a lot, disk / CD activity). Seems like it's not supplying enough
power or something. When I reattach the mains, it will still flicker until
the charge gets quite high (above 80% or so).

Do you think this is a battery problem, a video problem, or what? The other
possibility is the amount of heat the laptop generates. It gets
frighteningly hot after a while! I wondered whether overheating might be a
problem (and simply coincided with those times I was using the battery).
The PCMCIA card are almost too hot to handle when I take them out. Is this
going to affect their performance? The battery is one component I would
expect to be heat intolerant, given its chemical nature. Perhaps I should
take the machine to the local service centre here to be checked over (it's
still under international warranty), although I use it constantly so I'd
rather use that as a last resort.
