Er, I'm not sure I've ever understood this phrase myself, and I'm
old enough that I still use a 1935 Smith Corona manual typewriter to
crank out my email.
In our vinyl-collecting household, a broken record sounds like:
**crack**
uh oh (soft hi voice)
OH, SH*T! MATHIAAAAAAAAS!!! (loud adult voice)
I don't think this is what the phrase's originators had in mind:-)
