I'm almost certain you need a BIOS update.
The 500 was made in a time when IDE drives were limited to about 510 MBs
or so. You either need a special software driver or (better yet) an EIDE
(Extended IDE) interface to see anything bigger.
I don't know enough about the 500's to know whether the BIOS is
flash-upgradeable, but I'm sure they are. Check IBM's web site.
