Until I needed the space for OS/2, I had 250MB allocated for Debian
Linux.
It's very confiurable, but I don't recommend the installation (because
you have
to choose EACH and EVERY individual file. This may have changed in a new
release, though).

I know that Red Hat (at least the CD-ROM I have) has a batch file to
boot Linux from the DOS prompt. I don't know if it recognizes parallel
port
CD-ROMS, though. Usually, you need to create Boot and Root disks.

The boot obviously is what the name says - It boots up the system, and
autodetects some things in your system. Root has various programs
and the installation.

When you get used to it, it is, but on a mobile computer, it can be
a pain setting it up. I actually setup a 40MB partition (FAT) for the
hibernation
file and also put the compressed debian files in there, and mounted the
disk so I could install from there.

You might consider Slackware, because it has disk series, where you can
install the whole thing more easily off of floppy disketts. I actually
like it,
but if I had my choice, I'd choose Debian (except that installation is a
nightmare -
try and see for yourself).

I'm not a UNIX expert, but I would consider myself sort of intermediate,
so I will try to answer what I know.

Also, X windows suprisingly ran well with XFishtank, a background of
moving fish, FVWM95, which is a window manager with a Windows
95-type of look, and various terms. I also only have 12MB of RAM in my
machine,
and had NO swap partition.
