The 8x doesn't work at all under Linux. I don't remember about
OS/2. It's something screwy with the SCSI interface on the
drive itself - I tried it with both the Panasonic (QLogic) card,
and with an Adaptec 1460A card. Windows could see the drive,
Linux couldn't.
I settled for the 4x and have used it in either slot under
linux. I don't recall doing the slot-swapping experiment under
Windows, but I do know it works in the top slot.
