Calvin,
I've recently purchased several of the model 701C from IBM Credit Corp.
Both were delivered looking and performing as new, although the
peripherals do show some wear. Screen, sound, modem, keyboard and
trackpoint functions are fine and no cracks on lid.

I upgraded the ram to 40mb and Win98 seems to perform acceptably (given
that they're running 486s). Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for all the replies, both private and mailing list.
Everyone has provided new insights, opinions, & options on
the 701. I'm looking forward to receiving the machine.

If there's anything else you can think of in terms of
hardware related problems, please let me know. I'm not too
concerned about the software OS side, I don't anticipate any
        problems.

My main concern is that whatever was in need of
"refurbishment" has actually been fully fixed.

        OK, things to check for:
        1. Screen conditio; possible cracks on back of lid.
        2. Sound quality from headphone jack & multiport adapter.
        3. Internal modem function and connection.
        4. Keyboard & trackpoint function.
