Linux on external Syjet disk

I am trying to install Linux on my Thinkpad but running directly on a
external SCSI Syjet drive without using the laptop's HD. The problem is
that when I boot the Redhat Linux CD from DOS the installation program
doesn't see my SCSI HD. I am using an Adaptec SlimSCSI 1450 card. Has
anybody experience in a similar installation?
