        Eric, thank you very much for the below. I did indeed disassemble the
machine last night, removed the HD in hopes that I can put it into my
desktop and maybe still get something off of it, and checked the video
connector to the motherboard. I wiggled, jiggled, disconnected it and
reconnected it. Whatever it is, as you point out, its in the panel
somewhere, not the motherboard.

        Okay, so here's the dumb question: How do you gain access to the panel?
Seems to me the whole assembly is joined together in the plastic casing.
The trick is to get in there without breaking the plastic irretrievably...
