I upgraded my ThinkPad 760E about a year ago using a Toshiba 2.1GB
drive which is very quite.
I also have a Toshiba Portege 650CT, about 1996 vintage, which has a
1.3GB factory installed drive, which I assume is a Toshiba drive. It
does occasionally make the "thunking" noise.
I guess you just pays your money and takes your chances.
