David..
i have TWO IBM keyboards with trackpoints..
on two different dest type machines..
one is an ASUS P2B-LS motherboard and the other is some generic thing (but
fast)..
both use award bios..
both see and seem to support the trackpoint FINE..!!

i would bet that it IS your motherboard OR the IBM driver..
i use a generic driver found within win9x.. :-)
