Although most people do think the capability is good. It's a hassle or
unneeded capability for others. Especially computer stores who have
customers(?) who are effectively destroying demo machines by playing dumb
games like this. The implementation of setting the password should be a
little more difficult, IMO. Like having a specially coded floppy or unique
password to do the initial setting. The main problem the initial poster
has, is that he got it from a going-outta-business Computer City store
(as-is no returns), and is stuck because the manufacturer's warrantee
doesnt cover this sort of recovery.
Now some stores actually set their demo machines' passwords so it cant be
destroyed, but that makes for a poor demo machine. This may be the case in
this situation, but good luck trying to find someone left at that CC who
knows what it is or where to find it.
