I have a Thinkpad 755CX and under the Thinkpad setup app, you can assign
devices along with IRQ and DMA depending on whats spare...

Can you assign a DMA to the modem ? - does it improve speed?

How about to a parallel scanner?

I have selected the ECP for my Parallel LPT1 which (when working!) will
supply my printe and scanner... Can I assign a specific DMA here too?

I know nothing of DMAs other than they relieve pressure on the CPU for
certain tasks... like a buffer...?
