This is my promised follow-up, giving my experiences using an ABS solvent adhesive to repair my TP case.
First, I was unable to find the specific recommended adhesive (IPS/Weld-on #1707) anywhere I looked
(Eastern Iowa and Northern Illinois including Chicago area). So, I tried the
PVC/CPVC/ABS cement from the local True Value Hardware (do *not* use the PVC-only adhesive, make sure it has ABS on the label!)
It grabbed and set quite quickly, and seems so far to be quite strong. The seam is almost invisible, as one would expect with a
clear glue. Also, the solvent nature of the glue is such that the bond is very thin. I'm now waiting for the real test, whether it
really stands up to being lugged daily back and forth from the office.
The container is 4 ounces, I used less than one drop. Now I'm hoping something else will break (not on my ThinkPad!), just so that
I can use more of the glue:-)
So, the report is favorable. One caveat: the piece of case that broke off my
560 is entirely non-structural, in fact it just hangs over the hinge without touching anything, so in principle this repair doesn't
seem to be a good test
of the glue's stress resistance. On the other hand, the piece did break
off the case for *some* reason...
