linux XFree on a tp750

Hello,

I've recently installed linux on ye olde tp750. I intend to use it as a home file, print and
modem server. All works fine, except that it can't seem to keep up with mouse events.
when I click the mouse button I get unpredictable characters sent. This makes X pretty
useless. Any tips? Should I give up on x and run character based? The XF86Config
file knows this as a ps2 2 button mouse with 3 button emulation. I have 20 megs of ram.
