Hi all,
I just joined this mailing list and would like to introduce my
upcoming Thinkpad and me!
After using three different brands of laptops, I've chosen IBM
to be the fourth. I started out with a Toshiba Tecra 730 CDT,
then imported a Micron XKE 233 Mhz when it just came out and
the current one I'm using is a DEC Hinote Ultra 2000. The Micron
was exceptionally fast, but the DEC has a great screen and form
factor... But my demands have grown so I've been researching
the purchase for a new laptops for about a month or two.
At first, I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 7000: a speedy,
well equipped PII desktop replacement. But I had heard some
great things about the Thinkpad 770 series as well and was
impressed by their overall quality (I've played with a
233 mhz one a while back). Since I've had to send in both the
Tosh and Micron because of serious problems (broken screen,
hard disk...) I know what headaches poor support can cause.
This gave me a clue for going with the IBM 770X. I guess its
performance (especially the graphics) will be a bit weaker
than the Dell, but this is compensated by a bunch of features
like the new 13.7" S-XGA screen, hot-swapping, better NT
support, great docking options, less weight, 3 year int'l
warranty etc.. Well, you probably know all this already.
Anyway, I'll be receiving my Thinkpad 770X next Tuesday. It
will be the UK version, the Dutch version will not be avaiable
for a month or something. It will boast the 13.7" screen,
128 Mb RAM, 8.1 Gb HD, DVD and, ahem, Windows 98. Besides Win98
(for DVD, games etc.) I'll be installing NT and Linux for work.
I've already found some great info on installing RedHat, so
I hope this will be as easy as it has been with my DEC.
I'll be using the machine as a desktop replacement for various
internet apps, some coding (Java, Perl etc.), Photoshop, Illustrator,
Presenting, music making and the occasional gaming. For the latter
two, I'll be getting a dockingstation so I can add Voodoo and PCI
harddisk recording cards...
I hope I didn't bore you with this story, but I'm looking forward
to receive my 770X and will probably be sending you more in-depth
findings and questions on the machine when I'm actually working on it.
Cheers,
Jeroen Elfferich

PS: A question already: the archive for this mailing list, available
at http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/~cph/thinkpad.html, doesn't seem to
be up to date (latest messages date back to May)... Since I'd like
to know what's been said about the 770X here I was hoping there's a
place where I can browse more up to date archives? I've mailed Chris,
who maintains the archive, but dit not yet get a reply...
