Haven't tried Solaris 7, and I'd be a little afraid to run it because
I haven't really seen many x86 platforms running Solaris.
But I am running RedHat 5.2 Linux (2.0.36) on my 600E and it's been
a rather pleasant OS to be working with. Out of the box, 5.2 supports
the Neomagic 256AV in 1024x768 16bpp, (no truecolor support without
the $200 XiG driver). You can get DVD support if you use a 2.1
experimental kernel, but it defaults to CD ROM otherwise.
Installation is very easy if you set the DVD drive to be bootable in
system setup.
No ACP modem support. APM can be easily enabled during your first
kernel recompile. Battery life is exceptional in linux. The hard
drive hardly spins up, and my record is 4:45 doing some web
application development. My best in NT has been only about 3:05 or
so with aggressive power mgt.
Sounds support works well with the RedHat drivers, or you can go
$20.00 and get the OSS http://www.opensound.com drivers (which I use
without a problem).
2gb should be plenty... I set aside the same for my RedHat install,
and did pretty much a full install. Best part is that RedHat 5.2
takes only about 15 minutes to do a full install. :)

What is the other OS you'd be booting to? I'd personally suggest
sticking with lilo. RedHat 5.2 will do a 98/Linux dual boot without a
problem. In general, leave the MBR alone if you're dealing with a MS
operating system. Just write lilo to the root of the linux partition,
and set the linux partition to be bootable. NT is roughly the same.
Good luck!
