The discussion of the TP 560 warranty overlooks the fact that the warranty
for this machine can be extended for an additional 1-3 years (for a maximum
warranty of 4 years, including the original 1 year warranty) for the price of
$100 per year for EZ Serve service. This implies to me that IBM does not
expect many service calls in years 2-4 for the TP 560, since I expect that
$100 does not come close to covering the cost of even a single repair when
express shipping, paper work, labor, parts costs, telephone staffing, etc.
are totaled.

This system of permitting the buyer to purchase the duration of warranty
he wants in addition to the basic warranty, depending on his plans, I think
is better than a fixed period. Perhaps IBM should reduce the TP 770 and
TP 600 warranty to 1 year and reduce the price by $200, and then let the
buyer purchase the number of additional years he feels most appropriate,
depending on his upgrade cycle.
