Thanks for the quick response, Bill. A quick look at the used IRQs may have
convinced me that I want to disable the Mwave modem! Adding the Ethernet will
almost certainly require an IRQ, right? At least it does on the 755CE. On that
system, the single modem / Ethernet card share a single interrupt. It would be
nice to have enough free IRQs after modem and Ethernet to enable both the
serial port and USB, in addition to the IR port.

As it turns out, I have a few days to make up my mind on all this. The system
arrived, and the screen looks beautiful. But, it crapped out while doing a
Win95 disk scan. Plus, it fails its self tests (system board about half the
attempts, and memory all attempts). Pulling the 32Meg RAM out didn't help the
memory test, which means that the problem is with the system board or the
memory on it, I suppose.

ThinkPad support told me nothing I didn't already know about my problem. But,
they did tell me a couple of things I didn't know about my TP 770ED. I had
purchased it from onsale.com, knowing that it was a refurbished unit. What I
didn't know was that (according to the guy I spoke with at support), the
particular model number was not intended for US sale. However, despite this,
and the fact that onsale.com is not an authorized IBM reseller, IBM will stand
behind the 1 yr refurb warranty. However, they won't do so until they get a
copy of my invoice FAXed to them and come back to work after the weekend. So,
it appears that the earliest I can send it to EasyServe is Monday.

I asked the support guy about how to upgrade my warranty to on-site. He said
that IBM never did on-site service on ThinkPads. I informed him that I had
purchased such an option for my 755CE, and needed to make use of the service a
few times. He said he know nothing about it. So, it looks like I have to go
hunting through IBM 800-numbers again, until I find someone willing to take my
money to upgrade my warranty. sigh.
