Definately sounds like you are playing to the wrong TV system. I don't know
what format your test DVD disk is in: NTSC or PAL,(it should say on the
Jewel Case somewhere), but playing an American NTSC disk on a PAL TV will
definately screw up the colors, or more. I'm not sure if you can get SECAM
DVD's, but PAL and SECAM are almost identical and used a lot in Europe, but
the colors will get lost playing one on the other.

Here in NZ, most new TV's handle all systems so this is not a problem.

Using the TV as an external monitor, you can switch from NTSC to PAL in the
Thinkpad config program, try that and see the effects.

I'm guessing your TV cannot handle the Video system the DVD is encoded in,
but it will show up on the LCD display no matter what system it is in.
