I have a 560X, but the same should apply to your 770ED. If you're
using Win95 like me, go to device manager (and the TP config program),
disable IR, enable the serial port and reboot. Use device manager again
to change the IRQ for the serial port - you can use any of the alternate
settings. Reboot to enable the changes. Enable the IR port. The thinkpad
configuration program should no longer complain of conflicts. Reboot yet
again to activate the settings. You should then have both IR and serial
port active. I had this same problem a week ago; I have a scanner on the
serial port and sync to my PDA on IR; both are active simultaneously.

Good luck.
