I need to resolve this issue once and for all amongst my consultants
I deploy. Currently, we have a pool of 12 notebooks (Had 16 in service,
but in the process of selling off 3-4 755's, 760's and one 770). 6 of the
units are usually set up as sniifers/dial-ins and lesser tasks (Salvage
value is nil because of age, and they are functional sitting in a corner
as they take big HDs and collect data). These are 750's and 755's.
The other 6 are (3) 765, (3) 770 and (1) 770ED. Three of
us do the core of the application development, and 4 do field/tech work.
They are clamorin for x's, but would "settle" for ED's, and I feel the pull
too to get a 770x (which means I would pass down my 770ED), but after reading
the reviews, it doesn't seem the 770x offers that much more than the 770ED. I
am tempted to get a few more 770EDs (If I HAVE to) at $2699 vs. $5k for the
770x.
Has anyone
actually run some benchmarks of these units vs. the 770ED vs. 770? I was able
to locate some PC LABS testing of the 770 and 770ED, and placing them side by
side, the ED isn't exactly crushing the 770 around in application tests
(Mainly
Office97/Access development and VB 6.0) it beats the 770 by 19%, 19%, and
32% in
Winstone98, WinMark 98, and CPUmark respectively.
I am also apprehensive about the resolution being TOO great for serious code
crunchin' (And considering the fact that most apps we develop are geared
towards
1024x768 or lesser screen real estate). This means if I even considered the
770x,
it would be the 14.1" TFT model. The 8megs of SGRAM is basically
irrelevent. It
comes down to speed. Since I get to dictate what we buy, I am basically a
ThinkHead
through and through. :) I am pushing to skip the x series and if I can,
even get
the guys and gals to hold onto their machines now, but in the nicest,
rational
possible way. ;)
So, in summary, the differences appear to be:
P2-300 vs. P2-266
AGP vs. PCI
8megs of SGRAM vs. 4megs of SGRAM
