By "start" button, I presume you mean the Windows key. As the Windows hacks
here will tell you, you can get the same effect by pressing CTRL+ESC
together.

Some keyboards have a menu access key as well, which pops up the "file" menu
for the active window. This is accomplished on standard keyboards with
ALT+F.

Personally, I feel that the lack of those "extra" keys is a plus. They're
annoyingly easy to hit by accident, and if you ever switch to an operating
system other than Windows, you'll dislike the constant reminder of the life
you left behind.
