Chances are that since you're getting 46,000 bps normally instead of 50,000,
that your line is less than perfect. At my former address I had the same
problem. I brought a lot of modems and computers home from work and I found
that a lot of them just didn't work well on my home line, although they
worked fine at work. The price of the modem didn't seem to be a factor.
I think some handle marginal lines better than others.
