In my experience, WinModems (like the one in my 1720, and probably in
Warren's TP) are, in fact, awful. Mine works ok if the phone lines are very
good, in which case it nearly matches the speeds attainable with my 3Com PC
card. At home, however, in an apartment building with old, crappy phone
lines, my 3Com card is still able to squeeze out about 37333, while the
WinModem refuses to handshake at more than 26k or so.

I honestly don't see the advantage, in cost or performance, of including one
of these temperamental devices in a machine of the ThinkPad's stature. I'm
not sure why IBM went that route for the internal modems on these machines.
Anybody know?
