I went this route.
First, I tried the 3Com Megahertz V.90/10Mbps with XJack for the modem. (I
tend to like the XJack technology.) But something puts some nasty 60 Hz hum on
my phone line with I have both modems and the phone all connected together,
and this modem seemed to have problems getting higher throughput in these
conditions. Also, it claimed that the "analog" ports coming out of my 3Com
OfficeConnect ISDN Lan Modem [sic] were "Digital", and refused to use them.
Then, I traded that in (30 day return) for the 3Com Megahertz 10/100 LAN+56K
Modem model 3CCFEM556B. It comes with two dongles, one for modem (V.90 and x2)
and the other for 10BaseT or 100BaseTX connection. It successfully
auto-negotiates the 10 Mbps speed my home office currently uses. I'll be
taking it to my partner's home office and trying it on his 100 Mbps network in
the near future. This guy is happy to dial or accept incoming calls on the
OfficeConnect "analog" ports. Also, it seems to do a better job of rejecting
the 60 Hz hum, as I've seen it report higher connect speeds. WinFax Pro 8.0.3
works with it fine, sending or receiving Faxes. I have not tried getting it to
work with TalkWorks. Kermit-95 also (naturally!) talks to / through it just
fine.
Although the "ThinkPad Digital Signal Processor" is disabled in Device
Manager, I am still able to play various audio file formats. As far as I can
tell, it is not required for anything but modem use. But, it is possible that
it's used somehow for video capture or something like that, which I have not
yet tried. If someone knows for sure, I'd appreciate the info.
