Re modem
I'd suggest that you get all of the modem upgrades, but don't install the
v90. Once installed, then run and see what speeds you are getting. If
your local ISP has x2, you may find it is ok without adding v90. Also, if
your local ISP doesn't support v90 it will run even slower with the v90 in.
You may also want to try connecting using different lines - the difference
can be surprising.
I would also install the 'patch' too. The TP DSP modem is very sensitive
to line conditions - I get between 42000 and 45333 at work, and never better
than 32000 at home, plus have a hard time even getting on some times on the
home line and experience a lot of disconnects. This was never the case with
my flex56k modem in a Toshiba on the same line. I do suspect that my ISP
has different modems on line that contribute to anomalies in connecting.
