Are we talking about heat from the display here or heat generated by the
processor? My 755CD (a notoriously HOT running machine) and my 760XL
spend almost all their time in a docking station with the lid closed and on 24/7.
If we're talking about heat from the display Dave, then the answer is
"basically forever". Once the lid is closed, the display (essentially the
backlight) will go off. If it doesn't go off, then you have a broken lid switch and
you should have the unit serviced. If you're talking about heat from the
processor, then I really don't have an answer for you but I haven't heard of
any cases of self immolation amongst Thinkpads from processor generated
heat.
Paul, if your Sparcbook cooked because the lid was closed, why didn't the
display go off? I work on literally hundreds of computers we receive as
donations and I can't remember ever seeing one that didn't have some sort of
switch to turn the display off when you close the lid.

James
