I have a P2/266 770ED (model 9549-5AU). This model comes standard with a DVD
drive AND the Enhanced Video Adapter. I am not aware of a version of the 770ED
without the adapter (unless you mean a 770E). It is an option on the newer
(P2/300) 770X with the DVD drive. The software that is packaged with the 770ED
for DVD playback is called SoftDVD and does require the adapter. You might be
able to find a non-IBM program that does not use the adapter. The software
that is packaged with the 770X is ExpressDVD and does not (to my knowledge)
require the adapter. I do not know if it will work on a 77ED.
As for movie playback onscreen, it is ok (i.e. it looks like an MPEG movie).
Using the above mentioned adapter you can output the video and sound to a TV.
DVD movie playback is OUTSTANDING using this method, especially on a high
quality TV set.
