This should be a 701 FAQ.
I had the same problem, and an IBM technician gave me the
following init string
(My Computer / Control Panel / System Properties / Modem / Internal /
Properties / Connection / Advanced / Extra Settings ! )
ATE1Q0M1V1X4&C1&D2&N0&Q6%E1 S7=60 S11=55 &S1
It works fine. Late I purchased a 33.6 PCMCIA modem which works
2.5x as fast. It was an IBM, available as a "remainder" item
on the net for about $55.
Good luck!
