Thanks to all who responded to this problem. I received the "Thinkpad
Mike adapter" from www.speechcontrol.com ($4.95 + shipping) and it
fixed the problem right away.
Quick solutions and suggestions like the ones I received are what make
this mailing list / group SO helpful.
