Worked for me moving from a 760XL to a 600. I had misplaced the install
disks/files for several apps that I use and decided it wouldn't hurt to try
just moving over. I figured if the screen, keyboard and floppy worked, I
could get the rest going.

I used a parallel port tape drive to back up the 760, then restored it on
top of the 600's NT preload, loaded 600 specific drivers and utilities and
never looked back. I vaguely remember having to tinker with memory
locations to get my token ring card to work, but other than that, it went
fine.

The result has been satisfactory. I have a couple of apps that would
probably benefit from uninstalling and reinstalling (for some reason,
Quicken v6 can't find my printer, and Netscape v3.01 crashes about once a
day if I have multiple sessions open), but none have induced me to embark
on the Great Disk Hunt.
