Thanks! I knew it ought to be part of the Hayes modem command set, but I
didn't have a reference for it. Adding "W1" in the extra settings does just
exactly what I want - reports the connection speed when the systray DUN icon
is highlighted without having to run any additional modem monitoring
program.

Yes, there is a modem commang you can use in the "extra settings" modem config section. Issue a 'W1', this will report actual speed rather than pc-modem speed.
