Speaking only as a very satisfied customer, a solution that fits in
the "hook the ADSL to a Linux box" category is www.sharethenet.com

As I understand it, it's an implementation of Linux that does IP
Masquerading and nothing else (not even print serving, which is my
#1 enhancement request). You can get source code free, or for
U$70, get a Windows app that lets you input the data specific to
your network/connection, then generate a bootable 3.5" floppy.

The whole thing fits on a 3.5" floppy which you use to boot the
gateway machine. Theoretically, if you want the machine for other
things when offline, you can pop the floppy and reboot off the HD.
I can't imagine that many people bother with that. I'm currently
running ShareTheNet on my old 386/25 with two ISA cards.

I've administered SunOS in the past and have Linux. But I still
haven't gotten around to installing it. The U$70 I paid for STN
has paid for itself many times over, even if I abandon it for a
full Linux tomorrow!
