Apricorn (thinkpad proven) and I (cheaper) do the same thing...

not sure (yet) what they (Control memory) mean when they say bios overlay, but
if its the normal bios overlay its probably EZ Drive or an OnTrack bios overlay
which gets loaded first so the drive can be recognised...

since i have never seen a 1411 (sold one, but never saw the machine, it was
going to germany) so until after 8am pacific time i won't be able to learn much
more..

be sure you are getting an IBM drive (they're the best)...
I know Apricorn sometimes sells toshiba and other brand drives on occasion, i
use IBM unless the lowest price is specifically requested..
then i look for toshiba..
