I don't like them either. I would have gladly spent more for a real
built-in modem. And built-in ethernet, for that matter.
Nonetheless, I'd like to get it to waken from hibernate.

My experience too. I recently went through three supposedly identical
drives for my office desktop until I got one with an acceptable noise
level. Alas, that's harder for me to do here. I wonder if I could get it
replaced under warranty? Not that it's very loud, but sometimes it makes a
very annoying high pitched sound. At least it doesn't make a loud head
parking noise (or was it thermal re-calibration) like a Toshiba drive I had
a few years ago.
