What does pressing fn+F1 show? If it does say battery broken (or
somesuch), it probably means that the computer can not communicate
with the battery due to one of three reasons:
a) The little chip inside the battery refuses to cooperate, either
because it's broken, or because you charged the battery one time to
often (yes, the chip does contain a counter --- stands to reason
IBM is using it...).
b) The corresponding electronic insite your TP is broken --- resign
yourself to working from the power brick.
c) The battery's middle contacts somehow do not give a proper
connection.
Unfortunately I do not know any cheap solution to a) or b)...
