Mark..
1. i hope you did not pay too much..
2. its most likely the addressing on the brand-x drive..
3. Run "FDISK" from a DOS boot diskette to see if the drive is set up..
just check, don;t start anything..
4. if you had purchased a drive from me, it would have been set up to work
first time.. (i just must mention that, sorry<g>)
5. if you're trying to reuse the original HDD shell from the 755, the brand-x
drive won't work in it without some surgery.. easiest is to throw brand-x out
and buy a good IBM drive.. :-), next is to cut the pins that are set off by
themselves off (but that voids any possibility of a warranty and the like),
lastly is to cut the traces on the cable/plug assembly which will have the net
effect of isolating those four pins which are seperated from the rest of the 44
IDE pins..
(NOTE: this is what i would recommend for an IBM drive, the brand-x drive is an
unknown quantity, so proceed at your own risk)

the WD disk needs ot be cleaned off, then start from a know place..
yes, you can try DOS 6.2 or whatever is available, but a better method is
delete the partition table and start fresh...
(i have a very dangerous utility i keep on a floppy that will do this)

don't know why you can't get into ezsetup, try removing the drive and try
again..

unless you saved at least $100 from my exorbitant prices, you're loosing $$ by
wasting precious time..

remember, all newer IDE drives are the same (or should be) and everything
changed a year or so after the 755CX was put out to pasture by IBM..

want more help, call me... i'll TRY to get things set up for you..
