The original 720 MB on my 701C was much quieter than the spare
720 MB, which in turns is quieter than the 6.4 GB
which replaced it. All are IBM made. The fact that I bought
the latter two through inexpensive channels may have a bearing.
Perhaps IBM takes the quieter part of the production run!?

If power consumption is an issue, it's too bad that they can't
reduce the power wasted as noise. Or modify its frequency. A
low hum like the background noise of Star Trek TNG wouldn't be
so offensive. Or make the sound more musical. Or perhaps
somebody could invent a "caddy" which would baffle the sound in
laptops, or "bread" between which to sandwich a hard drive in a
desktop. OK, sure, they need to be able to dissipate heat, but
a sound insulator isn't necessarily a heat insulator.
