i see no reason not to use 2 wire, unless Brit Telcom requires 4 wire for
some arcane reason..
(and after witnessing what you guys call "mixer faucets" ANYTHING is
possible)

here in the US i use both 2 and 4 wire.. whatever happens to fall to hand
when i need a telephone cable..
in fact, i have seen ibm cables with only 2 centre wires in place..

the only aspect i must further comment on is that, in some cases, with
mulit-line and multi-station telephone systems (office and home) the
stations can use 4 wire cables and the orientation of the rj-11 plugs on
each end will be of concern..
i.e. red winds up matched with red on each socket.. (wall and station set)..

or, polarity might be important with the brit telcom..
