DIMM = Dual Inline Memory Module of the type used in notebooks...
in this case, the DIMM's i refer to are the type used in the 770 series of
thinkpad..
SO, if a 128meg part for a 770 has 16 chips on it, they must be 16x4, and the
problem with doing this in a thinkpad 770 or other notebook is the aforementioned
real estate problem..
that, apparently, is the only serious problem to using 16x4 over 16x8 chips..

in the case of desktop machines, which i think you may be referring to, all the
chips can be on one side for a 128meg part and on both sides for a 256meg part...
