755CX: 800x600 doesn't seem to work for me

I just purchased a 755CX. It's a beautiful machine. I installed Linux and
everything went very well. Even my network card worked the first time! The
only thing I need to make it perfect is to get the display to work with X in
800x600 mode. I was told by onsale.com that it is the type of 755CX that
supports 800x600 mode, so I've been taking their word for it, but is there
anything I can check, like a model number or something, to make sure that I
have what I think I have?

Anyway, I've been operating under the assumption that I got the right laptop.
I've looked at all of the sites that talk about running Xwindows in 800x600
mode. They all talk about the command 'ps2 mode3x on'. This computer came
with no software (OK, they were nice enough to format the hard drive and put
command.com in there so that it would boot into MS-DOS), so I went to the IBM
site and downloaded the files to get, among other things, ps2.exe for the
755CX. I installed the program, and then typed 'ps2 mode3x on'. The screen
went blank, then it came back with the message "Type ps2 ?". When I type 'ps2
?', I don't even see mode3x as an option. I also tried to download a utility
>from http://www.yy.cs.keio.ac.jp/~sanpei/how2800x600.html that is supposed to
put the laptop in this mode when it is run in Linux, but I could not download
it because the ftp server is down.

So, I was wondering if anybody here has experienced anything similar to what
I'm going through. Also, if anybody has ps2.exe on a thinkpad 755CX and would
like to e-mail it to me, that would be great. Or if you know which files I
need to download to get a version of ps2.exe with the mode3x option, I'd love
to hear that. Or, if you have that Linux program that does the same thing or
know where I could get it, let me know. Or, if I've completely missed
something very important (a strong possiblity), tell me.

Thanks.

andy
