Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions. In
my infinite stupidity and impatience, I restored the C
drive but left D alone. This probably overwrote the
MBR.
Then I dug up an old copy of Partition Magic 3.0 from
my days of messing with linux. It shows Partition 2 as
Type Free Space.
Ranish Partition Manager shows D to be Unused free
space and the wizard would do as PM would, i.e.,
create a new partition? It also says Boot sector
doesn't have valid information.
At this point, with the original MBR presumably gone,
chances of self-data recovery are slim? Neither of the
programs used have options to re-create partition or
FAT that I could see.
