I realize this may not be the moment to talk about prevention, but in the
interests of future drive operations I have a suggestion for a
pre-procedure, before entering this realm which is as you say fraught with
angst. I recently bought Norton Ghost in order to image my existing hard
drive and recreate it on a replacement hard drive. Unlike PQ DriveImage
(which I'd previously bought and returned), Ghost can do its transfers over
a $10 LapLink parallel cable between laptop and desktop. It worked
flawlessly, and allows you to keep backup images of your hard drives on the
second computer for emergencies, too. Best -- Jeff
